How To:

Begin by downloading and verifying the GnuPG archives from
<http://www.gnupg.org/>. Here’s what to type:

curl -O ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gnupg/gnupg-1.4.10.tar.gz
curl -O ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gnupg/gnupg-1.4.10.tar.gz.sig

If this server does not work please take a look at the morrors page of GnuPG
at http://www.gnupg.org/(en)/download/mirrors.html, choose a mirror and
replace the URL in an appropriate way. For instance choose
curl -O ftp://ftp.franken.de/pub/crypt/mirror/ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gnupg/
gnupg-1.4.2.2.tar.gz

To verify:

gpg –verify gnupg-1.4.10.tar.gz.sig

or, if you don’t have an older copy of GnuPG or another OpenPGP program
(NEVER verify the version of GnuPG you download with itself), use the SHA-1
checksums found on the GnuPG Web site and compare with the checksum from:

openssl sha1 gnupg-1.4.10.tar.gz

Next, untar GnuPG:

tar -xzf gnupg-1.4.10.tar.gz

And move into the GnuPG directory:

cd gnupg-1.4.10

Please bear in mind that the TIGER hash algorithm is no longer supported.
If you need to use the TIGER module refer to an earlier version of GnuPG
(1.2.6 or older). TIGER is not more part of the OpenPGP standard.

If you want to use IDEA (and have the legal right), follow the instructions
found on the Mac GPG Website in howto-install-IDEA. Afterwards, return here
to finish building and installing GnuPG.

If you need to include or exclude anything else please run the following
command to get a list of all options available:

./configure -h

Now you need to set up GnuPG to build on your system. You do this by
running configure:

./configure

NOTE: If you try to compile gnupg on Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) you only
will be able to run gnupg in 32bit mode. Thus you will have to compile it
for that mode. You can do this by using this command instead the above
mentioned:

./configure CC=”gcc -arch i386″

Once you have everything configured, it’s time to compile GnuPG by running:

make

(Tip for Power Users: To help make run even faster, use the -jn option to
overlap processes that make spawns where n is the number of processors on
your system plus one. For example, on a single processor eMac, you’d use
‘make -j2′.)

Optionally, you can run make check before you install to make sure that your
system will be safe to run GnuPG on.

make check

If all tests pass, the only thing left to do is type:

sudo make install

And, voila! GnuPG should be installed on your computer!

After you have GnuPG installed, it wouldn’t hurt to check the quality of the
random numbers being produced by /dev/random. To test this, first type:

gpg –gen-random 0 > rnd &

and after a little while kill the process (once you’ve got 20 or 30 MB of
random numbers). Then, using a program like ent, check the quality of the
numbers. Of particular interest will be the entropy, compressibility, and
chi^2 p-value (this should be as high as possible, as low as possible, and
as close to .5 as possible, respectively; see ent documentation for more
details).

This can save you a lot of time scanning through silly blogs like this one with top lists just seeking out traffic. Wakoopa itself will install an app, which I’m not in love with the idea of, but then has the ability to track your app usage, and automatically add your apps for other users. Pretty handy, just want to make sure your profile is not public, goto profile options.

If VMWare Fusion crashes for some reason and will no longer let you access your virtual machines, rather displays that they are in use, you may try the following steps to resolve the issue.

1. Quit VMWare Fusion.

Before you start, make sure that you have totally quit VMWare Fusion, and it is not running in the background.

2. Launch Terminal.

I decided to go into Terminal to remove the lock files given the Finder does not show hidden files and folders by default. (You could theoretically do all of this in the Finder if you enable viewing of hidden files and folders, but for me it was easier to just go straight to Terminal).

3. Change to the Virtual Machine directory.

By default, VMWare creates a directory under your user Documents folder called “Virtual Machines.localized” with subfolders for each VM.

On your Mac this directory name will likely be different than mine (it is based on the name of your actual VM). However as an example, on my Mac the directory is:

/Users/kenclark/Documents/Virtual Machines.localized/Windows XP Professional.vmwarevm

Therefore, the command to change into that directory (from the default terminal prompt which starts you in your home directory, i.e. /Users/kenclark) is:

cd Documents/Virtual\ Machines.localized/Windows\ XP\ Professional.vmwarevm/

4. Verify there are lock files in this directory.

Once you are in the VM’s directory, you should see a number of lock files intermixed with the VM files. To do this, just enter the following Unix command to list the directory contents:

ls -l

As an example, on my Mac I saw four lock files in addition to VMWare’s system files. They were:

Windows XP Professional-000001.vmdk.lck
Windows XP Professional.vmdk.lck
Windows XP Professional.vmem.lck
Windows XP Professional.vmx.lck

5. Create a directory to back up the lock files.

Theoretically you could simply delete the lock files, but I am more conservative and did not want to risk really messing anything up on my Mac. I created a temp directory for the lock files rather than deleting them.

Here’s the command to make a backup directory I am calling “lockfiles-temp”. (Please note I am assuming you are in the Virtual Machine directory when you do this).

mkdir lockfiles-temp

6. Move the lock files into the temp directory.

Again I moved the lock files rather than deleting them to ensure I could rollback if this did not work. Here is the command:

mv *.lck ./lockfiles-temp

At this point you should verify the move was successful, by executing another directory listing:

ls -l

When you do this, you should see no lock files in the VM directory.

7. Launch VMWare and Start your Virtual Machine.

Now, power up VMWare and you should see a new screen that shows your virtual machine is unlocked and either “Powered Off” (as mine shows below) or “Suspended” – in either case it will be ready to start up.

Tweaking VMware Fusion for the Best Experience

Have a MacBook Air or other Mac with 2GB or less of RAM?

VMWare Fusion by default is set to optimize performance for virtual machines disk access by caching IO in memory. The consequence of this is of course less RAM is available to the host or OS X as a result (Leopard, Snow Leopard, etc). A scenario occurs often with Macbook Air users, or older Macbook users that cannot use more than a certain amount of RAM. VMWare Fusion preferences and selecting the radio button to Optimize VMWare Fusion for “OS X Performance” which may result in slower disk access, but can result in faster overall system performance if you are generally low on RAM.

Open VMWare Fusion

Goto the Preferences menu

Toggle the performance preference to “Optimize for Mac OS application performance”

Need VMWare Fusion as fast as possible? Following these rules may help your performance.

Install as much RAM as possible, and assign at least 1GB of RAM to your Windows VM.

Don’t use the dual-virtual-CPU option.

Windows 7 typically takes 5-6% CPU on a 2.4GHZ Macbook Pro.

Use 64-bit client OS where possible (XP 64-bit, Vista 64-bit, Windows 7 64-bit), VMWare Fusion can leverage Intel’s VT hardware extensions. See this Arstechnica post.

Use Virtual SCSI over Virtual IDE (note: Windows XP install does not support SCSI natively, you will have to select Easy Install from VMWare).

Pre-allocated disks do not seem to perform better than non.

Vanilla file-based vmdk or VMs are surprisingly faster than accessing via boot-camp or native partition (potentially Apple’s NTFS read driver?).

Not sure this is even necessary to write, but simply put, Windows XP is faster Windows 7 which is faster than Vista (don’t use Vista?).

Accessing VMWare files from an external disk is faster than primary drive access.

Compact the Virtual Hard Disk periodically (Under VM -> Hard Disk settings)
